The Codex Reset Feature Most People Missed

I hit my Codex weekly limit with three days still left in the week, which used to mean waiting it out. OpenAI added a way to reset the limit yourself, so I made a short video showing it live. Here are the exact steps if you would rather read them than watch. You no longer have to wait for the automatic reset when you burn through your budget mid-week.

Read your usage first

I am on the $100 a month Codex plan, and the day before recording I ran about $300 worth of tokens on it. My weekly budget was at 0% left and 45% into deficit, though my 5-hour session limit was still fine. Just typing hi confirmed I had hit the limit, and Codex told me I could either buy more limit through a link or reset it. So the first move is knowing you actually need a reset. Run the uses command inside Codex and it shows your session and weekly usage plus how many limit resets you have banked. I had three available, and Codex points you to that same command right in the limit message.

The steps to redeem

Run uses again and pick redeem uses limit reset. Applying one does two things: it sets the 5-hour session limit back to 100%, and, the part that mattered for me, it sets the exhausted weekly limit back to 100% too. Confirm and it is done. I refreshed the Codex bar to verify, and both the session and weekly limits read 100% left. A reset you cannot see landed is not worth much, so that check matters.

Deciding when to use one

Banked resets are limited, so timing is the real skill. If you run out for a single session only, redeeming may waste value, because that session limit would have refilled on its own within a few hours anyway. If it is the first day of your week, you are not getting full use of the reset either, since you would spend it to recover time you were about to get back. My case was a good one: three days left in the week, weekly budget gone, and real work waiting. That is when spending a reset pays off. Late in a heavy week beats early in a light one, and holding one back for a genuinely maxed-out stretch usually beats burning it on a small shortfall.

If you lean on Codex and keep hitting the weekly cap, this is the workflow that keeps you moving instead of stalling for hours.
