I set myself a small challenge: explain generative AI in about 90 seconds, no jargon, one analogy. The final cut runs about 81 seconds. Here’s the idea behind it.
Start with the word “generative”
Generative means the tool creates new content rather than following rules you wrote. Text, images, code, music, all produced on the spot and not fetched from a stored answer. ChatGPT and Claude do it with words. Traditional software follows fixed instructions, generative AI makes something that did not exist before.
That’s the part people get right. The next part is where it gets interesting.
It’s predicting, not thinking
The engine underneath is prediction. Think of your phone suggesting the next word while you text: type “that sounds” and it offers “good” or “great.” Generative AI is that same idea on steroids. Your phone predicts one word, ChatGPT predicts entire paragraphs, trained on patterns from billions of examples across basically the whole internet, always guessing what should come next.
That is the genai analogy in one line: autocomplete on steroids. For generative AI explained simply, hold two facts together. It’s incredibly useful. It is not thinking.
Why it sounds confident and still gets things wrong
The same mechanism explains the weird moments. Because it always predicts something, it literally cannot say “I don’t know,” so it can write a confident paragraph that’s flat wrong. It is not lying on purpose, it just has no built-in sense of true or false and fills gaps with whatever pattern looks likeliest.
My favourite way to answer what is generative AI: it’s autocomplete that read every book ever written but never understood a single one. Knowing that changes how you use it. You treat it as a fast draft machine, not an oracle, and you check the parts that count.
